Lawsuit accuses rabbi, sons of taking nearly $63,000 from congregation

The synagogue may be shuttered but the power struggle at Agudas Achim North Shore Congregation in Uptown rages on.

The latest salvo came Thursday when one group, which has identified itself as the synagogue's board of directors, filed suit claiming the congregation's long-serving rabbi and his sons took nearly $63,000 from the struggling congregation and used it to gamble and purchase everything from a bicycle to Chinese food and even car insurance.

"It's not true, I didn't do anything with that account and neither did my sons," Rabbi Philip Lefkowitz said of the lawsuit filed against him.

He believed that the local rabbinical court couldn't make a finding in the matter and that, because it's binding arbitration, the case was closed. The synagogue, 5029 N. Kenmore, has been closed since 2008, when some members of the congregation questioned Lefkowitz's handling of donations.

Since then, two factions have formed, with Stephen Turk claiming he's president of the board of directors and Lefkowitz's son Levi saying he holds the position, the rabbi said.

EMBODYING EXCELLENCE: Daniel Webster Council

It's easy to say that the Boy Scouts is a great program: after all, what other organization expects its members to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent? These aren't suggestions. It's the scout law.

While people know scouts do good deeds and the Boy Scouts is dedicated to molding boys into the leaders of tomorrow, they may not be as aware of the true impact that the Daniel Webster Council Boy Scouts of America is having in NIL The Council serves 23,000 youth through 7,800 adult volunteers and 500 community organizations. It serves every NH community except four. It is the 56th largest council in the nation out of 309. "Folks in New Hampshire are surprised by the number of youth in the program and the scope of our outdoor program," says Al Lambert, scout executive.

Aside from the sheer number of lives the Council touches, though, the impressive programs it has developed are what make the NH program a standout. Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the Daniel Webster Council is carefully balancing its commitment to traditional values while exploring new opportunities to connect with young men and women. Several of the programs developed by the Daniel Webster Council have been adopted by the Boy Scouts of America, other scouting councils and nonprofits across the country.

The Council recently partnered with the International Center in Manchester to help children who have immigrated with their families. There are 25 youth involved in the program, which introduces them to the community, provides support to their families and "educates them about what being an American means."

The Council also developed a program to identify boys and girls who are in jeopardy of failing in elementary or middle school. Through its Outdoor Adventure Program, the children learn to have fun with education through a combination of scouting-designed classroom programs and the Council's outdoor facilities. It's been so successful, it piqued the interest of Sen. Judd Gregg, who helped to secure federal funding for the project so it can be expanded statewide. The Council also partners with Easter Seals of NH to provide outdoor camping to disabled youth.

With so many scouts in NH, the community contributions of the Council are far reaching. Every November, the Council conducts its Scouting for Food Campaign, which collects more than 500,000 pounds of food for the hungry. Each scouting group is required to provide at least 20 hours of community service annually, and projects range from park clean-ups to trail maintenance programs. There are also approximately 200 scouts each year who seek to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, which requires they put together extensive community projects.

"What energizes me most is the community service we do. From the basics of teaching 7- and 8-year-olds to give back to the community to the fantastic scope of the Eagle projects, I'm impressed with the impact those community service projects are having across the state," Lambert says.

Island's cut off UK map AGAIN; HOLIDAY FIRM HAVEN THE LATEST TO FORGET ANGLESEY... DESPITE IT HAVING SITES NEARBY.(News)

Byline: OWEN HUGHES

ANGLESEY has been brushed off the map AGAIN - this time by a leading holiday firm with sites in North Wales.

Haven Holidays has omitted Anglesey from the UK map on its brochure and website - prompting an angry response from a tourism chief and local residents.

This is the fourth time in recent months that the island has been airbrushed from the map, with apologetic cereal giant Weetabix the last firm to leave out Anglesey.

The holiday company defended its position, saying it did not include any islands on its UK map.

Jane Blakey, managing director of the Anglesey Tourism Association said: "We're just astounded this is the second time in less than a month a national company misses Anglesey off the map.

"Haven is the largest UK holiday operator so they should know better than to overlook a major holiday island.

"Although they don't have a holiday park on Anglesey, they do have sites in Pwllheli and Prestatyn so they should know the geography of North Wales better.

"It is high time marketing departments and the agencies they employ stop reinventing the UK map."

Suzanne Robinshaw, 34, of Brynteg, noticed the error while browsing the 2010 Haven Holidays brochure.

Suzanne, who works at Bangor University, said: "It has happened again, this is a national travel firm and I can't believe these things are not checked.

"I was browsing through the brochure at my parents' house as they regularly go on Haven Holidays but maybe they won't any more.

"If they can't bothered putting us on the map why should we go with them? Anglesey should be represented on the UK."

Last month Weetabix chopped Anglesey off the map in its pounds 1m competition campaign on the back of cereal packets and on its web pages, leading to a furious local response.

They later apologised and restored the island to its rightful place on their website and are set to launch a competition for Anglesey residents.

In 2008Walkers Crisps also left out the island on its Brit Tours tourism campaign.

This saw deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones write to the company.

They also said sorry and later launched an Anglesey Sea Salt crisp flavour.

A spokeswoman for Haven Holidays said: "The map is a graphic representation of mainland Britain where our holiday parks are situated."

Per usual, Sox' timing is terrible

Doesn't it figure that just when the White Sox start feeling goodabout things, they now must deal with a potential work stoppage thatwill derail all their newfound optimism.

This team couldn't get a break if it dropped a carton of eggs.

Mark Buehrle is on a collision course with a 20-win season, whileJoe Crede not only exists, he is starting to deliver. Early returnson D'Angelo Jimenez are impressive and Aaron Rowand has held down thecenter field spot. Jon Garland served up a performance with all thetrimmings Wednesday.

The last thing the Sox need now is to go on vacation, just whenthe future was starting to look bright.

"It would be difficult if they did …

NIMO SUPPLIERS SUPPORT DEBT DEAL.(BUSINESS)

SYRACUSE -- Niagara Mohawk Power Corp.'s plan to pay down debt and reduce electricity costs to get ready for competition won the support of all its suppliers except for CalEnergy Co.

Under the plan, which New York regulators approved in February, Niagara Mohawk will collect $6 billion in costs stemming from high-priced power-purchase contracts and power plant debt.

The plan also would reduce Niagara Mohawk's obligations with 28 independent power producers in exchange for $3.6 billion in cash or debt and 46 million shares of Niagara Mohawk stock, or about 25 percent equity ownership.
