All 115 staff lost their jobs after administrators closed the firm on January 15.
Many of the company's 14,000 clients now face losing their homes and life savings and
are considering legal action.

QLD:Qld police charge 141 drink drivers
BRISBANE, Dec 4 AAP - More than 140 people have been charged with drink-driving over
the weekend after Queensland police flooded the state's party hot spots.
More than 1655 uniformed and plain-clothed Queensland police were involved in Operation
Unite, the nationwide weekend blitz on alcohol-fuelled violence and anti-social behaviour.
Police had caught 141 people for drink-driving after performing more than 10,000 random
breath tests, Deputy Commissioner Ian Stewart said on Sunday.
In addition, 602 traffic infringement notices were issued.
"Violence, drink-driving and other life-endangering behaviour will not be tolerated
in our entertainment precincts," he said.
"Any number of arrests is disappointing, particularly with 141 drink-drivers caught on our roads.
"One drink-driver is too many. People should know that if they drink and drive they
will get caught."
Police attended 1752 licensed establishments and detected 56 licensing breaches.
Police also issued 155 liquor infringement notices.

Energy-saving tips
Byline: Sushma Veera
Edition: Main/Lifestyle
Section: Life & Times
Each year our electricity bill keeps increasing but not our salaries. Lately, many are also concerned about saving the environment. SUSHMA VEERA browses the Internet for tips on using less energy
1 Laundry with hands
Washing machines sound like the best choice when it comes to laundry. If you don't have many clothes, wash them by hand. If you prefer to use the machine, gather them all and wash at one go.
2 Cut down on water heater
Water heaters consume a lot of electricity. If the weather is hot, bathe in cold water. No point using the water heater only to come out sweaty again.
3 Regularity to Refrigerator
The refrigerator is not your cupboard. Avoid opening and closing it as you like. Take whatever you need all at once. This helps save electricity and keeps the food fresher.
4 Defrost food
Defrost food before baking or microwaving it. This uses less energy. Instead of defrosting food on the counter where it may spoil or in the microwave where it will use extra energy, place it in the refrigerator 24 hours before you need it.
5 Switch off TV and radio when not in use
We tend to leave the TV or radio on when we are in another part of the house. Switch them off when you leave the room.
6 Use ceiling fan
Reduce usage of the air-conditioner. A ceiling fan uses less electricity. It is more than a cooling device. It can effectively distribute heat throughout your home by breaking up the cool and warm layers of air.
7 Natural sunlight
Dry your clothes in the sun instead of using the dryer. Sunlight is a natural disinfectant and causes a natural lightening effect on your clothes. Clothes look brighter and smell fresher compared to those from the dryer.
8 Use energy saving bulbs
Change the normal fluorescent bulb to energy saving ones. You will not notice a difference in brightness but you certainly will when your bill arrives. Energy saving bulbs not only allow you to save money but also do your part for the environment. They also need not be replaced as frequently.
9 Plug off
Unplug all appliances when not in use. Most of us use the remote to switch off the TV or stereo, leaving the appliance on standby mode. When you do this the appliance continues to consume electricity.
10 Keep it clean
Clean your air filters regularly. Dirt and dust hinder air flow, reducing efficiency. This will increase power consumption.

SA: Maralinga lands returned to traditional owners
By Tim Dornin
ADELAIDE, Dec 18 AAP - After the devastation of nuclear blasts and a wait of more than
50 years, the Maralinga Tjarutja people finally have their land back.
The final section of the former Maralinga nuclear test site in South Australia's north
was returned to the traditional owners in a ceremony on Friday.
It followed the passing of legislation in the SA parliament allowing for Section 400,
an area of 3,100 square kilometres, to be handed back.
Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin attended the ceremony and said it
was a day to reflect on history and past decisions which disturbed and then all but destroyed
traditional ways of life.
"But we also reflect on the determination of the Maralinga Tjarutja people to reclaim
their land and their strong links to country," she said.
"Their determination to move from the north, the south and the west back to their homelands
- to establish the community of Oak Valley and live again in the red desert country."
Ms Macklin said the Maralinga Tjarutja people faced many challenges as they continued
to build a strong, independent future.
"But now they can build their own future on the land that has been rightfully returned
to them," she said.
"A future where children living in this remote part of Australia are given every chance
to benefit from change to be healthy, to be safe and to learn.
"Where children grow up understanding and holding close their connection to their land,
the songs and stories of their elders, their culture and their traditions."
South Australian Aboriginal Affairs Minister Jay Weatherill said while the Maralinga
story was one of suffering and loss, Friday's ceremony was about healing.
"The British nuclear tests occurred during a period in our history when little regard
was given to Aboriginal people or their connection to the land," he said.
"The Maralinga Tjarutja people were put through an unthinkable experience.
"They were forced from their lands against their will, they had nuclear weapons tested
on their traditional sacred lands and important parts of their community and beliefs were
torn from them."
Mr Weatherill said the handback followed years of negotiations and extensive rehabilitation work.
The Maralinga area was used by the British government for nuclear tests between 1953 and 1963.
The first handback of land to the Maralinga Tjarutja occurred in 1984 with two further
parcels of land returned in 1991.
The final section to be returned is located about 300km northwest of Ceduna.

Fed: Taxes rank low, as cab drivers flag revolt
By Jessica Marszalek
BRISBANE, Aug 10 AAP - Three-quarters of cabbies have no qualms about dodging their
taxes, according to new research into Australia's taxi industry.
University of Queensland researcher Maarten Rothengatter on Monday released the findings
of a survey of taxi drivers in which 75 per cent admitted they did not pay income tax.
The drivers were based in Sydney, Darwin, Melbourne and Geelong.
Dr Rothengatter said he was driven to explore the financial issues facing cabbies from
his own experience working as a cab driver in the 1990s.
He said his research was based on focus-group interviews in which he asked taxi drivers
why they felt they were entitled to avoid paying their taxes.
"The central theme that justifies the non-compliance of both drivers and cab-owners/operators
is basic survival - the defence that if one was to pay the full amount of tax, it would
no longer be worthwhile to operate a cab," Dr Rothengatter said.
"As some of the informants put it: 'Without cheating, you would die'."
But a crackdown on the industry would likely result in an acute shortage of cabs, impacting
on the hospitality, tourism, entertainment and sporting industries, as well as inconveniencing
the elderly, frail, young and those with disabilities, he said.
Australian Taxi Drivers Association president Michael Jools said the results of the
study did not surprise him.
He said regulators set taxi fares at a level that assumed drivers were not going to
pay tax, leading to drivers working long hours for little pay.
"If drivers were given the basic level of minimum wage the rest of the community enjoys,
plus things like holidays and sick leave and annual leave and workers' compensation, then
quite probably they would feel a lot happier about paying tax," Mr Jools told AAP.
"But because they feel like second-class citizens and are paid like second-class citizens,
many of them don't think they need to pay tax."
He said drivers' incomes were so low - at about $12 an hour - that it probably worked
out at the end of the financial year that they were under the taxation threshold in any
case.
Mr Jools said little would change until taxi drivers were regarded as employees, rather
than subcontractors, and the cost of taxi plates fell.
In addition, the percentage of a passenger fare that went to the plate holder - currently
totalling $4.50 of the average $20 ride - had to come down, he said.

Qld: Scientists call for retention of long paddock
Ed: Embargoed until 0600 AEST, Thursday, August 28
BRISBANE, Aug 28 AAP - Scientists and conservationists say vital wildlife corridors
will be lost forever if state governments sell off a network of stock routes in Queensland
and NSW.
More than 450 ecologists and wildlife scientists today called on NSW Premier Morris
Iemma and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh to protect the network, established in the mid-19th
century to help transport livestock between properties and to market.
Director of the University of Queensland's ecology centre Professor Hugh Possingham
was one of the signatories to the Long Paddock Scientists' Statement which is contained
in an open letter to the premiers.
He said administrative changes imminent in both states threatened the future health
and integrity of the vast network that is home to endangered plants and animals.
"Research shows the network supports some of the last strongholds of Australia's most
threatened native animals and plants on public land and it provides some of the last connections
of nature in our extensively cleared and modified landscapes, thus facilitating the movement
of animals and plants across the landscape," Prof Possingham said.
Yesterday, drovers met in the NSW town of Dubbo, in the state's central west, to form
the lobby group Mates of the Stock Route.
Wilderness Society campaigner Cecile Van der Burgh who was at the meeting, said the
routes were managed by 47 rural land protection boards for their biodiversity values.
"A review has recommended to the (NSW) government that travelling stock routes should
be ceded back to the Department of Lands unless the local boards can provide a business
case for their retention, which means they have to be profitable," Ms Van der Burgh said.
"This means the Department of Lands can do whatever they see fit with their routes.
They can lease them or sell them or do whatever they like."
Drovers and environmentalists wanted the remaining NSW network to stay connected after
it had already receded from 2.3 million hectares in 1975 to 600,000 hectares in 2001,
she said.
Last month, a report was released in Queensland for public comment aimed at finding
ways of improving management of the state's 72,000km-long network of stock routes.
The report called for a user-pays system to fund local governments that manage stock
routes and the division of the network into "active" and "inactive" routes, with different
levels of management.
It backs a previously stated promise by the Bligh government not to sell off or lease
the stock route network.

WA: Stokes won't be going anywhere if he loses, says analyst
By Warwick Stanley
PERTH, April 22 AAP - Should Kerry Stokes lose tomorrow's battle for The West, it's
unlikely the war will be over.
No-one can be sure which camp will prevail at tomorrow's extraordinary meeting of shareholders
in Perth to decide whether the Seven Network owner gains up to two seats on the board
of West Australian Newspapers (WAN).
A 19.4 per cent shareholder in WAN through his Seven interests, Mr Stokes wants seats
on the five-person board for himself and Seven director Peter Gammell.
WAN chairman Peter Mansell wants to stop the boardroom break-in, accusing Mr Stokes
of a grab for control "without a premium being paid to our shareholders".
The war of words between the pair began early last year and escalated in recent months,
culminating in Mr Stokes' call in February for an extraordinary meeting at which shareholders
could vote on whether to keep the existing board.
The stoush may end tomorrow at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the city centre, just a stone's
throw from the Swan River.
Mr Mansell and three fellow fellow non-executive directors, Jenny Seabrook, Mel Ward
and Erich Fraunchiel, say they are prepared to resign if the pair are elected.
Mr Stokes has said if he is successful in gaining the seats, Seven would increase the
board numbers to seven and vote its key stake for University of Western Australia's senior
deputy vice-chancellor Margaret Seares and Perth engineer and ex-Vodafone chief executive
Peter Abery.
Sydney-based media analyst Mark McDonnell, of BBY Securities, likens the wrangle to
a political election.
"The imponderable is how many people are going to be bothered to vote," Mr McDonnell said today.
"Even after you look at the people with substantial holdings, there are still about
5,000 shareholders with substantial positions, in a relative sense, to the total share
register.
"That's quite a large number of people and it's very difficult to be sure how many
of them feel sympathetic to the criticism that Seven have made, and how many feel a change
is desirable.
"The fact that Andrew Forrest, who is even wealthier than Kerry Stokes, has come out
in favour of a change, might not necessarily translate into votes among those shareholders
who are less wealthy.
"What has has emerged over the last week or so is that there's a clear ticket.
"Prof Sears was at pains to point out she's independent and she's only just met Kerry
Stokes for the first time.
"To complete the election analogy, we've now got the sense that there's a Seven ticket."
Mr McDonnell said even if Mr Stokes fails to gain a seat on the WAN board tomorrow,
his bid is unlikely to end there.
"If the existing board is returned, it's hard to image the Seven board will desist
from its criticism," he said.
"With 19 per cent, they're actually a party that has right every right to be heard.
"You need a lot of parties to successfully vote against that position.
" ... Mr Stokes gives the impression from his public performances he's thoroughly enjoying this.
"As far as Mr Mansell's concerned, it's almost as if (he's saying) `how dare this
man criticise us' ... it's as though directors were meant to be unaccountable to their
shareholders.
"If the existing board board is returned I don't think it's over, not when you consider
how determined Kerry Stokes can be."

BRISBANE, Feb 13 AAP - Four people have been injured in a multi-vehicle crash police
believe was caused by the driver of one car swerving to avoid dogs on a road at Yugar,
north of Brisbane.
Among the injured was a seven-year-old boy who had to be airlifted to the Royal Children's

to the same hospital by ambulance.
Their 42-year-old father, whom police believe swerved to avoid hitting dogs on the
road, was taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital with a broken leg.
Police said the father and his two sons, from Cedar Creek, had been travelling along
Mount Samson Road at Yugar about 7.10am (AEST) this morning when their car hit an oncoming
vehicle, which was then pushed into the path of a third vehicle.
The car in which the young boys were travelling rolled several times, while the second
ran down an embankment.
The two boys were in a stable condition later today.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 20-year-old Caboolture man, was also taken to hospital
with cuts and bruises, while the driver of the third vehicle, a 34-year-old Dayboro woman,

FED: New communications for rail freight
NEWCASTLE, April 13 AAP - A new $62 million communications system will boost the efficiency
of rail freight movements in Australia, federal Transport Minister John Anderson said
today.
The deputy prime minister said $42 million would be spent on a scheme to provide a
single communications network across the entire interstate rail system.
He also announced $20 million to computerise in-cab signalling in trains, provide a
satellite-based train tracking system and new computerised warnings to alert drivers to
any dangers.
Mr Anderson said the upgrade would allow more trains to run on the same track, improving
freight capacity.
"The system will enable the Australian Rail Track Corporation to operate more trains
on the same track with a higher level of safety," he said.
Mr Anderson made the announcement in Newcastle, saying the improvements would allow

The federal government has won the right to have some evidence in the case against
an alleged terrorist heard in secret.
FAHEEM KHALID LODHI is facing a committal hearing in Sydney's Central Local Court on
nine charges of conspiring to commit terrorist acts between May and October last year.
The 34-year-old former architect from Punchbowl in Sydney's west is alleged to have

He's also alleged to have been linked to French terrorist suspect WILLY BRIGITTE.
Barrister DAUID SIBTAIN, appearing for four major media organisations, told the court
that the principles of open justice and freedom of communication should override the perceived
threat to the public interest.
But commonwealth solicitor TOM HOWE has argued the public interest should allow for
certain evidence to be heard in closed court.
Magistrate MICHAEL PRICE granted the application, saying that suppressing some of the

How could anyone let a child wear these?
Byline: ESTHER RANTZEN
RECENTLY, I had the repulsive experience of taking part in a TV debate with a paedophile. I don't regret it. It forced me to confront reality: that some men have such an obnoxious mindset that they are prepared to argue publicly that from earliest babyhood, all children are ready and willing for sexual relationships with adults.
A psychiatrist sitting next to him remonstrated: 'No, that's not true.' And I told him what I know from the thousands of children who ring ChildLine, that this most damaging form of abuse steals their childhood from them.
But paedophiles live in a fantasy world in which they want to believe they are being seduced constantly by flirtatious toddlers, and nothing any of us said shattered his hideous delusions.
I believe the respectable, wellloved High Street store, Bhs, has fed his fantasies.
Yesterday, it emerged that they were selling provocative push-up bras and bikini pants embroidered with hearts and the slogan 'Little Miss Naughty'.
The knickers were being sold to seven-year-olds and the bras to ten-year-olds.
After an outcry, the store has withdrawn the underwear, but don't they realise the harm they have done? The underwear is crude and ugly, and distorts the simple beauty of a child's body.
How could anyone strap a child into a bra which was created to emphasise a woman's breasts?
Yes, it is true that many children are maturing physically earlier than ever, but not this early, thank heavens, and not emotionally.
So why would a designer decide to create the impression of breasts on a child whose mind and body is and should be - to use a word which has gone out of style - innocent.
As a mother, I know that children like to feel grown up.
Small girls envy and imitate their big sisters.
My own daughters used to wobble around in my high heels and wedge their heads into my straw hats. They put brightly coloured wooden necklaces round their necks and clipped paper earrings to their ears.
THEY looked adorable, but never sexualised. Even if they smeared my old lipstick on their faces, they looked like Coco the Clown rather than Mata Hari. Why does it matter if a store stocks a range of ugly underwear? Because I believe children need protecting more than ever today.
Commercial pressures are fierce. Magazines for 17-year-olds are read by 12-year-olds. Britney Spears dressed up in a schoolgirl's uniform for her pop video and became a role model. Sevenyearolds go on diets and pierce their ears.
We no longer send our children up chimneys to sweep them, as they did in Victorian times. But we don't protect them from psychological threats which can be just as dangerous.
Internet chatrooms reach into our homes, children are far more adept than their parents at accessing this technology and few parents police their conversations. And anyone can pretend to be a child on the internet.
Pornography is available on video, and in busy, overstretched households children are often left alone with the TV as their babysitter. Who knows what they are watching and what effect it has on them?
The manufacturers of alcopops have removed the one barrier that always deterred children from drinking alcohol - to a child, strong drink used to taste bitter and disgusting. But not any more.
Now it's sweet-flavoured and as tempting as lemon, orange or lime. No wonder children are drinking earlier, getting drunk and binge drinking.
Year by year, the pressure grows. As commercial companies push the boundaries, they try to persuade children that to be young is to be uncool.
But even they can't change nature. A child is still a child at heart.
Without life experience to protect them, they can't control the new temptations which are being sold to them.
Perhaps it is inevitable that Britain now leads Europe for teenage pregnancy, not a record to be proud of. It is easy to blame the children, but as a society we adults need to take the responsibility.
I worry that we are allowing our protective instincts to become blunted. For this is not the first time a leading retailer has marketed inappropriate underwear to children.
Ten months ago, another established High Street store, Argos, created G-strings for nineyearolds. There were so many protests and complaints that they were withdrawn from sale.
Psychologist Richard Beckett, who works with sex offenders, warned Argos that children wearing the kind of provocative underwear which is normally worn by adults could put them at risk.
The only surprise is that it took a psychologist to point this out, and that it took protests from their customers to persuade them to withdraw the clothes.
WHAT designer, what fashion buyer, what company director could have allowed such inappropriate underwear to go on sale in the first place? Now, less than a year on, Bhs has committed almost the same blunder.
And no doubt it will happen again. When it does, it is important that we all protest. It's not simply a puritan response to a tasteless piece of marketing.
Unless we make it clear that we believe childhood has its own value, its own innocence and must be protected, we condemn our children to the fantasies of those who prey on and exploit them. And that must not be allowed to happen.
