Fed: Australians need New Year tax reform, says PM = 2

Mr Beazley said 1999 would be a year to reflect on Australia's strengths as a nation and
how to project ourselves to the world.

Australia's strong sense of community had been exemplified by the Sydney-Hobart yacht race
and the Victorian bushfires, he said.

"It is these qualities that have helped us build a confident and tolerant nation in our
short history," Mr Beazley said in a statement.

"And it is these qualities that will allow us to face the new century and the new
millennium with strength and pride and purpose."
