Qld: Kiss-off celebrates new anti-discrimination law

At least 20 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people will celebrate a new lawwhich comes into force today by kissing on the steps of state parliament.

University of Queensland's Student Union Male Queer Sexuality officer KHRYS ROBB saysthe changes to Queensland's Anti-Discrimination legislation have been won after decadesof fighting.

Among the changes is the award of legal rights to gay couples.

But Mr ROBB says the legislation doesn't go far enough for transgender people who can'tafford the surgery to change sex.

Such people want to be able to change the sex listed on official identity documentssuch as birth and marriage certificates and drivers' licences.

But Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commissioner SUSAN BOOTH welcomes the legislation, saying it will cover people most at risk of discrimination.

The so-called Kiss-off will start at noon AEST.
